KAMAAL WILLIAMS 3 YOURSELF

With his last release dropping only 3 days ago, London rapper, producer and musician Kamaal Williams is on a roll having just released another single '3 Yourself', alongside an inspiriting music video titled A film for our brothers and sisters in Hong Kong that explores visual landscapes of oppression, freedom and protest. Filmed in Hong Kong, the video is a montage of photos and snippets of film: graffiti states "end institutional violence", skaters ride over park benches and people of all ages join together in protest. The song is a jazz/funk explosion, decorated with colourful bass playing, unhinged drumming, expansive saxophones and swelling synths. The track is mainly instrumental, with a minimal, yet uplifting spoken word section where Kamaal advises "be yourself to free yourself, don't worry about what no ones thinking". For the last 30 seconds, the song goes into a jazz/funk infused house section, with a vibrant drum part hitting open hi-hats, accompanied by a funky bass line and fruitful saxophones, aided with the mellow hum of a synth pad. '3 Yourself' is an inspiriting piece of jazz, accompanied by a video which is great food for thought. -Ellie Rose-Davies
